Example Understanding teaching strategies that meet diverse learning needs and abilities During completion of my studies, various placements and within my part time role as an Educational Support Officer and Out of School Hours Carer, it has become evident that students have varied learning needs. I have worked closely with students formally diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and feel that often students with ASD possess specific learning needs. My experience working with these students has fostered a keen interest in their learning requirements. It is for this reason I used ASD as a research focus in one of my university assignments. The knowledge I gained from my investigations has assisted me in developing teaching strategies and skills specific for certain students. It has been especially useful whilst working as an ESO/OSHC. Features of an appropriate teaching pedagogy include but are not limited to: - the individual development of learning profiles specific to each student and their needs - the inclusion of curriculum considered ASD specific - - ensuring the learning environment is supportive and comfortable for the student - the use of a variety of systematic strategies when teaching - the inclusion of student’s family and other community members such as professionals in the field - the use of ‘a positive behavioural support approach to challenging behaviours,’ - significant and thorough planning and collaboration

Example Varying student abilities- Reflection of four teaching placements
Over the course of my teaching placements, I have encountered a wide range of students with varied academic abilities. I have taken note of the fact that my classroom teacher mentors, often alter their teaching strategies and learning plans to meet all student needs. This in turn, has demonstrated to me the common need for alterations and adjustments and the importance of the ability to be flexible during lessons. In the snap shot below, adjustments are listed. These include adjustment of the language used by the teacher, the use of visual aids and varied terminology, the use of subtitles and specific classroom configuration.
