4.1 Support student participation Identify strategies to support inclusive student participation and engagement in classroom activities
Example An inclusive classroom It is important that educators endeavour to maintain inclusive learning environments at all times as it is well known and documented that students learn best when they feel safe, supported and able to be themselves. Teachers must implement strategies to ensure those at risk of being excluded or 'left out' are given every opportunity to be part of an inclusive learning environment. I have used an effective strategy to promote inclusion during my final teaching placement. This strategy was introduced to me by my mentor teacher. Strategy Prior to student arrival at the beginning of the week, a card containing a number (1-27 as there are 27 students in the class) is placed on each students desk. These numbers vary each week. When students arrive at school on a Monday morning, they are asked to line up at the classroom door. Each of the 27 students is given a piece of card which again contains a number. Students have to find the number on the chair matching the one in their hand and this forms their seating position for the duration of the week. Reflection Students enjoy this system as they are able to work and engage with different students every week. Students learn how to respect diversity and differing views. Parents have responded positively to this strategy and some have noticed a 'confidence boost' in their children.
Example Class Collaboration Encouraging students to share their opinions and feel confident to demonstrate a 'give it a go' attitude increases their learning opportunities. An effective way of ensuring this is through class discussions. It is important for the educator to begin the discussion by explaining some rules and respectful behaviours that should guide the discussion. Principles such as only having one person speaking at a time, raising ones hand when requesting to speak and respectfully listening to others views and ideas are invaluable in ensuring an effective and inclusive learning environment. I have demonstrated the above in the classroom (see image included). Students responded well and enjoyed the experience.
