3.6 Evaluate and improve teaching programs Demonstrate broad knowledge of strategies that can be used to evaluate teaching programs to improve student learning
Example Daily collaboration with mentor teacher It is vital to constantly assess and reflect upon ones teaching so student learning is optimal at all times. Throughout my teaching placements, I have received feedback in varied formats. Ongoing verbal feedback has been very valuable as it has allowed me to adapt certain methods 'on the go' during lessons. This has provided me with the opportunity to trial many varied strategies and observe their effect on student outcomes.
I have also received written feedback following lessons. My mentor teacher has taken the time to systematically discuss my progress and provide constructive feedback regarding what I am doing well and areas that would benefit from a change in style or strategy. Below are two examples of written feedback received during my final teaching placement.
Example Professional collaboration and ongoing development Discussion with peers is a simple and effective way to learn new skills and teaching strategies, whilst reflecting on ones own. I have engaged in these discussions in both my capacity as a Pre- Service teacher and employed Educational Support Officer. Gaining the perspectives of others is an excellent opportunity to source new ideas and share innovations with others. Ongoing reflection and assessment The Reflective Teaching Cycle is a useful tool used by educators to assess practice. The tool prompts questions including but not limited to practice, content, pedagogical considerations and challenges. A full explanation of the Reflective Teaching Cycle can be found here. Ongoing professional development and self evaluation improves the quality of teaching. This subsequently benefits student learning as teaching strategies are refined and optimised.
